Providing Breakthrough Solutions to the World's Most Pressing Challenges

InnoCentive's expertise — providing open research, development and innovation assistance to private and public corporations — offers an especially rich opportunity for the not-for-profit sector. We invite and encourage not-for-profit organizations to explore the unique open innovation benefits we can provide and to learn how prize philanthropy and open innovation can spur breakthrough discoveries.

"...Rockefeller is teaming up with InnoCentive, an online business that posts problems and offers rewards to innovators who solve them. Rockefeller will provide funding to adapt this "open innovation" model to helping the poor. Next are likely to be projects on climate change and on the growing economic insecurity that many people experience."
-The Economist

We offer the unprecedented capabilities of our global network of world-class engineers, scientists, business people, inventors and other creative thinkers that represent a wide spectrum of disciplines. By joining the open innovation revolution and tapping into the power of crowdsourcing, your institution not only increases its research and development capacity significantly, but also reduces cost, risk and research failure.

The InnoCentive Open Innovation Solution and Crowdsourcing:

  • Inspire breakthrough discovery through prize philanthropy
  • Connect not-for-profit organizations with creative minds to solve unique and life-changing Challenges
  • Provides a marketplace for InnoCentive Solvers™ to make a positive impact on the world. Hear how one Solver feels about the impact he has made by solving an InnoCentive prize philanthropy Challenge.
  • Works with renowned philanthropic organizations such as the Rockefeller Foundation, GlobalGiving, The Oil Spill Recovery Institute, Prize4Life and others. Listen to an NPR interview with Mark Bent, CEO of SunNight Solar, where he talks about using InnoCentive to bring light to the darkest corners of the world.

How it Works
The not-for-profit organization posts its R&D Challenge on InnoCentive's website along with an appropriate award. InnoCentive's Solvers submit solutions to the Challenge. The Seeker pays an award to the winning Solver only if the Challenge is solved. To learn how the Oil Spill Recovery Institute successfully used the InnoCentive Open Innovation model to solve a previously unsolvable 30 year old problem, view the video.
