About Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute
Based on the firm belief that solid research is an integral component of medical advances, the Lerner Research Institute is home to Cleveland Clinic's laboratory-based research. Nearly 2,000 scientists and support personnel pursue a wide range of biomedical questions at the Institute.
Lerner Research Institute programs cover all major areas of disease, including: cardiovascular, cancer, neurologic, musculoskeletal, allergic and immunologic, eye, metabolic, and infectious diseases.
Federal funding alone was over $106 million in 2010. The total research budget (from external and internal sources) exceeded $240 million.
In 2010, discoveries from Lerner Research Institute Faculty appeared in nearly 1,400 publications, including 1,300 journal articles, over 80 book chapters and many books. Many of their publications were in highly respected, high-impact, peer-reviewed journals.
Also in 2010, Lerner Research Institute investigators generated three new spin-off companies, 19 patents and 14 licenses.
Lerner Research Institute’s Genomics Medicine Institute opened in early 2005 offering a unique model integrating laboratory research and clinical services in the same department. The facility places Lerner Research Institute at the forefront of this exciting area of exploration and discovery.
Lerner Research Institute is committed to academic excellence, and the great majority of its faculty also have appointments at local prominent educational institutions. More than 175 graduate students conduct their thesis research at the Lerner Research Institute. The Lerner Research Institute created the Molecular Medicine PhD Program to train doctoral students to use laboratory research to solve clinical problems. Also, the Lerner Research Institute is an integral component of the new Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University – dedicated to training the next generation of physician-scientists.
In addition to the laboratory research conducted at the Lerner Research Institute, most clinical departments are involved with translational and clinical research. Numerous Lerner Research Institute investigators hold secondary appointments in clinical departments, and many clinicians hold appointments in Lerner Research Institute departments. The high enthusiasm for applying the latest basic scientific knowledge to clinically relevant questions leads to many fruitful collaborations and a rapid transition from benchtop discoveries to bedside practice.
