Routine blood tests are commonly ordered by a physician to provide information about a patient’s health. Samples are collected by venous blood draws and then sent to a laboratory for analysis. Some people find the venipuncture procedure to be a painful and stressful experience. Therefore, the Seeker desires to improve the patient experience by finding a minimally invasive blood sampling method that will yield accurate test results for a dedicated parameter: potassium.
This Theoretical Challenge requires only a written proposal.
Potassium is an electrolyte that is essential for maintaining heart function and healthy blood pressure as well as regulating skeletal and smooth muscle contractions. It is one of several parameters measured in an electrolyte panel. Small changes in potassium levels cause no symptoms, but severe and protracted fluctuations can be life-threatening. Often a report of high potassium is due to the release of intracellular stores from ruptured blood cells during the blood draw. Thus, it is important to minimize hemolysis to achieve accurate potassium readings. Other issues that complicate sampling include difficulty in attaining vascular access and patient discomfort during the procedure. Therefore, the Seeker desires a minimally invasive blood sampling method for accurate potassium measurement.
This is a Theoretical Challenge that requires only a written proposal to be submitted. The Challenge award will be contingent upon theoretical evaluation of the proposal by the Seeker.
To receive an award, the Solvers will have to transfer their exclusive Intellectual Property (IP) rights to the Seeker. See the Challenge-Specific Agreement for full details.

What is a Theoretical IP Transfer Challenge?
An InnoCentive Theoretical Challenge builds upon an idea but is not yet a proof of concept. A solution to a Theoretical Challenge will solidify the Solver's concept with detailed descriptions, specifications and requirements necessary to bringing a good idea closer to becoming an actual product or service.
This Challenge is a Theoretical-IP Transfer Challenge, meaning that Solvers must relinquish all rights to the Intellectual Property (IP) for which they are awarded. By contrast, Theoretical-Licensing means that the Seeker is requesting non-exclusive rights to use the winning solution. For these forms of a Theoretical Challenge, Solvers that do not win retain the rights to their solution after the evaluation period is complete. The Seeker retains no rights to any IP not awarded.
