Abstract

The Challenge is looking for a thin film that, when applied to hands and other open parts of the human body, would prevent people from being infected with the COVID-19 virus.

This Theoretical Challenge requires only a written proposal.

Overview

The COVID-19 virus is highly contagious and is transmitted through the exposure to respiratory droplets of infected people or via contact transmission via hands or intermediate objects, i.e., shared shopping carts, door handles, stair banisters, etc. To prevent the infection, social distancing, washing hands frequently, and wearing gloves and masks to protect exposed body parts are recommended.

Any additional protective measures against the infection that are simple and intuitive to use are highly desirable. This Challenge, therefore, is looking for a thin film that, when applied to hands and other open parts of the human body, would prevent people from being infected with COVID-19.

This is a Public Service (PS) Challenge and as such is not expected to have an award value typically representative of a Challenge demanding equal effort and published by a funded Seeker. Please engage with that expectation. At the same time, should InnoCentive find a third party interested in acquiring the details of any submission, InnoCentive will notify the Solver and put the interested party in touch with them. None of InnoCentive PS challenges will involve the transfer of IP as part of the Challenge process, meaning the Solver retains those rights to develop the idea on their own. InnoCentive will retain the non-exclusive right to share the submissions with any party in an effort to address the crisis at hand.

This Challenge is a Theoretical Challenge without IP conditions beyond those specified in the Challenge-Specific Agreement (CSA).  We are asking for Solvers to provide more than top-of-mind solutions but to write those submissions in such a way to provide historical precedent and technical literature supporting each element of the submission wherever such is possible.

This Theoretical Challenge requires only a written proposal.

This is NOT a Reduction to Practice Challenge and hence no experimental evidence is required. On the contrary, any experiments on live subjects, human or animal, are forbidden and will disqualify the submission. If any such information would be supportive, please use literature citations only in support of your proposal.

Submissions to this Challenge must be received by 11:59 PM (US Eastern Time) on June 15, 2020.

Late submissions will not be considered.

What is InnoCentive?
InnoCentive is the global innovation marketplace where creative minds solve some of the world's most important problems for cash awards up to $1 million. Commercial, governmental and humanitarian organizations engage with InnoCentive to solve problems that can impact humankind in areas ranging from the environment to medical advancements.

What is a Theoretical Challenge?

An InnoCentive Theoretical Challenge builds upon an idea but is not yet a proof of concept. A solution to a Theoretical Challenge will solidify the Solver's concept with detailed descriptions, specifications and requirements necessary to bringing a good idea closer to becoming an actual product or service. For details about treatment of IP rights, please see the Challenge-Specific Agreement.
