Award: £3,000
Deadline: 24th April 2022

In a world that produces so much data, Thales recognizes our need to do more with the information we all generate. With Artificial Intelligence (AI) playing an ever-greater role in our daily lives, the tools that could be the answer to this issue are developing at a rapid rate. As the Seeker for this Challenge, Thales is keen to find ways in which humans engage with AI and use it to find specific data in an instant.

This is an Ideation Challenge with a guaranteed award for at least one submitted solution.

Buried in the countless images, videos, audio clips, and other information out there could be the crux of revolutionary ideas, much-needed medical cures, or the next big technological innovation. We just don’t know, as identifying the data we need is like looking for a needle in the biggest haystack in history. As the need to take action against forces such as climate change and global inequality, and as society prepares for a new ‘normal’ in how we all work, making the processing of data simpler and more efficient is in everyone’s interest.

Thales recognizes the importance of this need and are launching a Challenge in response to this. By focusing exclusively on image data, they’re looking for Solutions that allows anyone to find and quickly understand vast amounts of data from a single view. This Solution should also allow for the combing of that data in order to extract specific data, and support optimization of these processes. All of this will lead to a greater engagement with AI, making the modern challenge of data processing a thing of the past.

This is an Ideation Challenge, which has the following unique features:

  • There is a guaranteed award.  The award(s) will be paid to the best submission(s) as solely determined by the Seeker. The total payout will be $4,000, with one award being at least $2,000 and no award being less than $500.
  • The award(s) will be paid in pound sterling (GBP), at the exchange rate in effect at the launch of this Challenge on the https://www.xe.com/ website, which equates to the total payout of $4,000 (USD) to be £3,021 (GBP).
  • All intellectual property rights, if any, in the idea or concept demonstrated by the Proposed Solution will remain with you. By submitting a Proposed Solution to this InnoCentive Challenge, you grant to the Seeker a royalty free, non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, sub-licensable license in respect of all such intellectual property rights, if any, for the purposes of commercial exploitation of the idea or concept demonstrated by the Proposed Solution. Notwithstanding granting the Seeker a license for the Proposed Solution, you retain ownership of the Proposed Solution.

What is an InnoCentive Ideation™ Challenge?

An InnoCentive Ideation™ Challenge is a broad question formulated to obtain access to new ideas, similar to a global brainstorm for producing a breakthrough idea or market survey which may include ideas for a new product line, a new commercial application for a current product, or even a viral marketing idea to recruit new customers. Ideation™ Challenge submissions are typically about two written pages, and Seekers receive a non-exclusive, perpetual license to use all submissions.

In an Ideation™ Challenge, Solvers may:

  • Submit ideas of their own
  • Submit third party information that they have the right to use and further the authority to convey that right and the right to use and develop derivative works to Seekers
  • Submit information considered in the public domain without any limitations on use

Solvers should not reveal any confidential information in their submissions. Often the Ideation™ Challenge will be followed by one or more of the other three Challenge types to further develop the ideas and gain Intellectual Property protection when the concept has been well-defined.

The Student Challenge consists of two rounds:

Round One. Solutions will be accepted from March 23rd, 2022, at 8:00 GMT to April 24th, 2022 at 23:59 GMT. This disqualification shall not entitle the Participant to claim any kind of compensation from the Seeker.

Round two consists of an oral presentation by the Participants of the selected Solutions. Participants are not required to upload a Deliverable to the Challenge website before the second round. However, Participants must prepare a Deliverable that meets the specifications, which include: A document describing their Solution and presenting, for example, the problem it tackles, the proposed solution, and its impact. This document will be used as a presentation document during the oral presentation given by the Participants involved in the Challenge.
