Challenge overview

The Seeker requires a design for a more accurate clamp-on ultrasound flow meter. Currently available versions of this technology can achieve accuracy of +/- 3%. The Seeker is looking for a design accompanied by supporting data that will significantly improve this accuracy while maintaining the ease of use of the clamp-on format.

This Challenge requires only a written proposal.

Clamp-on flow meters are used in multiple industries to measure the flow of liquids – from water to crude oil – within pipes. Most ultrasound flow meters detect flow velocity by measuring the difference in transmission time of ultrasonic pulses propagated into and against the flow of the liquid, while some monitor frequency shifts (Doppler effect) in ultrasound pulses reflected by particles, gas bubbles or areas of turbulence within the flow.

A theoretical design is required that will result in a significant accuracy improvement for clamp-on flow meters.

This is a Theoretical Challenge that requires only a written proposal to be submitted.  The Challenge award will be contingent upon theoretical evaluation of the proposal by the Seeker.

To receive an award, the Solvers will have to transfer to the Seeker their exclusive Intellectual Property (IP) rights to the solution.  However, the Seeker will be willing to consider a licensing agreement for a partial award if exclusive IP cannot be transferred by the Solver.
