CHALLENGE OVERVIEW

Fred. Olsen Seawind and Hafslund are seeking innovative solutions to streamline the maintenance of offshore wind farms, with the goal of reducing operational costs and minimizing health and safety risks for workers. Offshore wind farms, often located far from shore, require regular inspection, monitoring, and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment, utility systems, subsea structures, and turbine blades. Current maintenance practices, which rely heavily on manual interventions, pose significant safety risks and involve high operational costs. This challenge aims to identify technologies capable of enhancing maintenance procedures, reducing the need for human intervention, and ensuring long-term efficiency and safety in offshore wind operations.

ABOUT THE SEEKER & ELIGIBILITY

Fred. Olsen Seawind and Hafslund, key players in advancing development of offshore wind, are inviting global innovators—from startups to established companies—to submit solutions that will revolutionize the maintenance of offshore wind farms. We are looking for scalable technologies that can be implemented in offshore wind farms situated up to 150 kilometers from shore, under challenging weather and environmental conditions.

CHALLENGE DETAILS

Background

The operation and maintenance (O&M) of offshore wind farms are not only costly but also logistically complex due to their remote locations, often located over 100 kilometers from shore. The harsh and unpredictable conditions in these environments, such as extreme weather, high winds, and rough seas, compound the difficulty of performing regular inspections, repairs, and parts replacements. Offshore maintenance commonly involves human intervention in confined spaces, which poses significant health and safety risks, including exposure to hazardous conditions like electrical malfunctions, high altitudes, and unstable marine platforms.

Currently, much of the maintenance is conducted on a fixed schedule, regardless of component wear or failure, leading to inefficiencies and downtime. In addition, heavy-lifting operations, required for the replacement of large main components, must be carefully coordinated, often requiring specialized vessels and cranes or towing to shore. These logistics add considerable costs and time to the process. While some offshore wind farms have started using condition-monitoring systems to detect potential failures before they occur, the reliance on human intervention and costly processes remains high. Moreover, with offshore wind capacity expected to increase significantly over the next decade, the need for more efficient, scalable, and safe maintenance solutions is becoming urgent.

Industry Opportunity

The introduction of enhanced and streamlined maintenance solutions presents a significant opportunity for the offshore wind sector to address several key challenges. These technologies could not only lower the operational costs associated with travel, personnel, and logistics but also dramatically reduce the health and safety risks involved. Autonomous systems for instance, such as drones, robotics, and remote-controlled equipment, could enable more frequent and precise inspections, ensuring that potential issues are identified and addressed before they lead to costly breakdowns. Additionally, such systems can operate in hazardous or difficult-to-reach areas, including turbine blades, subsea structures, and internal tower components, without risking human safety.

Beyond the immediate cost and safety benefits, solutions to enhance maintenance could significantly increase the availability and uptime of wind turbines. With fewer unscheduled maintenance events and optimized repair times, wind farms can operate more efficiently, extending their operational lifespan. The ability to implement predictive maintenance, where equipment is serviced based on real-time data rather than fixed intervals, could further drive down costs and improve reliability. As global demand for clean energy accelerates, innovations in streamlined maintenance will be key to unlocking more efficient or new opportunities, especially in harder-to-reach offshore locations and environments with harsher weather conditions.

SOLUTION REQUIREMENTS

Must-Have Requirements:

1. Cost-Efficiency: The maintenance costs associated with the solution should not exceed the costs of the maintenance processes it replaces/enhances.

2. Offshore Compatibility: The solution must be capable of operating in offshore wind farms located up to 150 kilometers from shore. If the solution entails remote control and monitoring, it should function reliably with fiber-optic or satellite communication systems.

3. Weather and Environmental Resilience: If the solution is to be placed offshore it must be able to withstand and operate effectively in the extreme weather conditions of the North Sea, including high winds, rough seas, and the significant structural movements of wind turbines, both for floating and bottom-fixed foundations.

4. Technology Readiness Level (TRL): We are open to solutions at various stages of development, from early-stage prototypes (TRL 3) to production-ready technologies (TRL 9). Solutions at lower TRL-levels should provide a clear development path toward scalability and readiness for commercial deployment.

5. Reliability and Safety: The proposed solution must ensure high levels of operational reliability, minimizing the risk of failure during operation, and should prioritize the reduction of health and safety risks for maintenance personnel.

Nice-to-Have Requirements:

1. Health and Safety Benefits: In addition to reducing costs, the solution should ideally reduce the exposure of personnel to hazardous offshore environments, contributing to a safer working environment.

2. Environmental Impact: Solutions that help minimize environmental impact, both in the development and operation of the technology, will be considered highly valuable.

3. Scalability and Adaptability: Solutions that are scalable and adaptable to different offshore wind farms, and that can operate under varying conditions (e.g., different geographies, turbine models, and seabed types), will be favoured.

4. Integration with Existing Systems: Solutions that are compatible with existing wind farm infrastructure, including condition-monitoring systems, remote operation platforms, and other maintenance technologies, will be seen as advantageous.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

  • Innovation and Effectiveness: Does the solution introduce new and effective approaches for streamlined offshore maintenance?
  • Cost and Efficiency: How well does the solution reduce operational costs without compromising on performance or safety?
  • Health and Safety Impact: Does the solution significantly reduce the need for human intervention, particularly in hazardous environments
  • Feasibility and Scalability: Can the solution be feasibly deployed at scale across multiple offshore wind farms globally?

THE PRIZE

Successful solutions will have the opportunity to collaborate with Fred. Olsen Seawind and Hafslund through monthly meetings during the first six months after award. Relevant experts from Fred. Olsen Seawind and Hafslund will engage in dialogue with the winning idea to develop and refine the solution further, and potentially piloting their technologies in upcoming offshore wind projects. This partnership offers innovators the chance to set new industry standards for cost-effective and safe offshore wind farm maintenance.
