Dubai Electricity and Water Authority

Innovation in clean energy

View our latest Challenges

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) was formed in 1992, by a decree issued by the late Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum to merge Dubai Electricity Company and the Dubai Water Department, which had been operating independently before then.

DEWA has made considerable achievements, to be ranked as one of the best utilities in the world. DEWA provides services today to over 930,000 customers with a happiness rate that reached 95% in 2018.

The UAE, represented by DEWA, maintained its first global ranking, for the fourth year running, with scores of 100% in all Getting Electricity indicators in the World Bank’s Doing Business 2021 report that measures the ease of doing business in 190 economies around the world. DEWA reduced its losses from electricity transmission and distribution networks to 3.3% compared to 6–7% in the US and Europe. Additionally, DEWA achieved the lowest customer minutes lost per year (CML) in the world of 1.66, compared to 15 minutes in Europe. DEWA managed to decrease water network losses from 42% in 1988 to 5.1% in 202020, compared to 15% in North America, which is one of the best results in the world.

DEWA continues its efforts to upgrade Dubai’s entire water network by replacing old connections and meters with new ones, and developing the transmission and distribution networks as per the highest international standards. The smart adoption rate of DEWA’s services reached 93% by the end of Q1 2019, and in 2018, the customer happiness rate reached 95% in 2018.

The Challenge Agreement specifies if and how IP will be transferred between Solver and Seeker; it may also specify any special rules, such as exclusionary rules for categories of Solvers, that apply to the Challenge.

You must accept the Challenge Agreement to be able to submit a solution to the Challenge. Be sure to read and understand the Challenge Agreement for each Challenge because you will be subject to the applicable Challenge conditions.
